The 2023 Beach Patrol of the Year will host tryouts for part-time lifeguards from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, at the Ormond Beach YMCA, 500 Sterthaus Drive. Prospective candidates must be at least 16 years old on or before June 1. Additional qualifications are required and can be found online at www.volusia.org/lifeguard.

More tryouts are scheduled throughout March, each from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on:

  • March 9 – Port Orange YMCA, 4701 City Center Parkway
  • March 16 – Ormond Beach YMCA
  • March 23 – Port Orange YMCA

Once prospects pass the initial swim tryout, they will attend one of two recruit classes. These classes consist of 48 hours of mandatory ocean rescue training, 44 hours of Emergency Medical Responder training, and a CPR course. Successful completion of the class, background check, physical, and drug screening are all conditions for hire. A $750 recruit sign-on bonus awaits those who fulfill the recruit class requirements, with an additional $1,000 bonus available for those committing to a specified number of days during the beach season. Detailed information regarding the bonus structure will be provided during the recruitment class.
