In 2008, NewsRadio WNZF 1550 AM and 106.3 FM went on the air in Flagler County.
“Four years ago, Flagler County and Palm Coast had no local radio stations,” said David Ayres, general manager and vice president of Flagler County Broadcasting.
The station has grown steadily in the past four years, adding Beach 92.7 with no news in 2009, Easy Oldies 100.9 in 2011 and KIX Country 98.7 this past August. In other words — something for everyone in their estimated audience of 79,500, spanning from St. Augustine to Daytona Beach.
“We carry ABC national news and have a full-time staff of meteorologists who, 24/7, only look out for Flagler County,” Ayres said. “We focus on local news, but we also have the Wall Street Journal report, CBS news and some local news headlines.”
For those wanting to turn on the radio at work or home, Ayres suggests Easy Oldies and describes it as “a classy lifestyle station you can leave on all day.”
The philosophy is different from larger stations.
“Bigger market stations work for ratings and national money," he said. "We don’t play the ratings game. Our ratings are as we are relevant in our local community and are our advertisers getting results. The local community should be able to depend on us.”
Remote broadcasts take the radio station out and about for local charity events.
“Like any business, we like to be out and meet people, network and shake hands. People do business with people they know and like,” Ayres said.
