I know snook have been scarce since the freeze a few years ago, but I thought readers should know snook season on the Atlantic side of Florida closed Friday, June 1. It reopens Sept. 1.

Although snook has been practically nonexistent in local waters, they are being caught in other parts of the state. I received one from a buddy of mine down in Jupiter who had a few pictures of a 35-pound snook he caught in 18 inches of water using an 8-weight fly rod and a yellow topwater fly. He also mentioned that he is catching a lot of snook at night under dock lights.

In another email, there was a picture of an 8-pound snook that was caught in Miami. I mention these two catches because I know that some of you do travel to other parts of the state to fish.

On the home front, the fishing was a little on the slow side this past week. However, if you searched long enough, you could find some fish. Most of my bites came about halfway through the falling tide, whereas the week before, the bite was about halfway through the incoming tide. Unfortunately, there is no telling when the bite will turn on, especially with the weather we’ve had lately. Changes in barometric pressure, wind directions and higher-than-normal tides all have an effect on how, where and when fish feed.

Some good-sized trout and flounder have been caught on my boat in the last two weeks. Most of the fish have been caught on live shrimp.
