+ Club to provide funeral insurance to deputies’ families
Sheriff Donald Fleming said the Sheriff’s Office has joined the Volusia 100 Club.

The club helps families to pay for funerals and other arrangements when law-enforcement officers die in the line of duty. The Sheriff’s Office will pay $100 per year to be part of the organization.

“That’s the kind of check that you never want to get something in return for,” Fleming said. “But it’s nice to know you have it, in the back of your mind.”

The organization, which is almost exclusively based in Volusia County, has given more than $40,000 to families since 2005.

+ Palm Coast extends building-permit fees reduction
The Palm Coast City Council, at its Oct. 4 regular meeting, unanimously approved to extend the building-permit fees reduction ordinance for another year.

The city implemented a 90% reduction in building permits fees in June 2009. According to Nestor Abreu, community development director for the city, approximately $173 million has been spent on construction within the city since the reduction was put into place. The reduction in fees has translated to about a $1.5 million savings for permit applicants.

The program was scheduled to sunset Dec. 31, 2011, but now will extend another 12 months, or until the building activity picks up. The city also plans to provide support, as needed, for Flagler Beach’s building department.

+ Queen palm snaps during storm, in R-section home
The queen palm that used to tower over Chuck and Joan Flaherty’s R-section backyard broke in half during a storm Sunday night. The palm landed on top of their wooden swing and was later cleared away by their landscapers, VerdeGo.

+ Man crashes into parked Lexus and Volvo, jailed for DUI
According to a report from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, Joshua Mark Hopkins, 29, of Palm Coast’s R-section, was driving a Chevy at 3:25 a.m. Oct. 8, on Rymfire drive. Because of a faulty door latch and driving too fast, he was ejected from his car as he went around a turn.

His Chevy then crashed into two cars, a parked Lexus and a parked Volvo. Hopkins was transported to the Flagler County Inmate Facility on three misdemeanor charges: driving under the influence and two counts of DUI property damage.

+ Houseguest arrested for attempting to run over host
Ciara Christina Librera Seymour, 19, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (her car) when, according to a witness, she attempted to use her black Mitsubishi Eclipse to drive over her host, Debbie Lynn Branam.

Deputies from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office responded to the disturbance the night of Oct. 6. They learned that Seymour had been staying with Branam, on Ferdinand Drive, for a week, before she was asked to move out.

Branam stated that Seymour tried to run her over, and that she was afraid for her life. A neighbor and independent witness concurred.

Seymour’s explanation was that Branam walked up to her vehicle with a piece of wood and started to strike the vehicle. Seymour drove onto the lawn in an attempt to get away.

Seymour was placed under arrest and also charged with criminal mischief of less than $200, a misdemeanor, in addition to the felony of aggravated assault.

+ Corrections
Flagler County Public Transportation Service is now available 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays.
