Marion Gavins, 20, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of Palm Coast teen Curtis Gray.
Circuit Judge Terence Perkins pronounced Gavins' sentence on Oct. 22 after Gavins pleaded guilty to a charge of first-degree murder, according to a news release from the State Attorney's Office. Perkins also sentenced Gavins to five years in prison for assaulting a corrections deputy in jail.
The murder occurred in the early morning hours of April 13, 2019.
Gray, 18 and an FPC track team member and former Matanzas football player, was outside a smoke shop on Belle Terre Parkway when an SUV approached, with Gavins in the rear seat.
Gray walked toward the car, and Gavins, then 17, said something to him then shot him in the abdomen before pointing a gun at the driver, who sped off, according to the news release.
Gray was airlifted to Halifax Health, and described his shooter on the way there. He died later the same day.
There were multiple witnesses to the shooting, and deputies caught Gavins 36 hours later. He had a criminal history dating back to 2014.
Gavins' sentence will be reviewed after he has served 25 years, according to the news release.
