Ida Merritt received a standing ovation from family, church family and friends for her 100th birthday recently celebrated at the former Bunnell City Hall. Family connected from everywhere, including Colorado, Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, New York and Connecticut, for the celebration.
Greg and Paulette Gary, the centenarian's nephew and niece, hosted the celebration, which Gloria Singleton and Patricia Howell coordinated. The day brought joy, along with dinner, a birthday cake, gospel vocals, tributes and gift-giving.
Century tree blooms in Palm Coast family’s yard
Marc and Joyce Etienne have lived in Palm Coast for 18 years, during which they’ve watched a century tree in their yard grow and grow.
“She’s like family to me because I’ve been clipping her to make her pretty,” Marc Etienne said.
The tree is on its last life, standing at about 40 feet high.
FCSO division chief graduates FSA's Commanders Academy
Flagler County Sheriff’s Division Chief Steve Brandt graduated from the seventh class of the Florida Sheriffs Association’s prestigious Commanders Academy on Friday, June 8.
Chief Brandt was chosen as class president by his peers for the two-week in-depth training academy. Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly was asked to be the commencement speaker at the graduation on June 8, where he spoke on leadership and the importance each individual in the class has to lead and prepare future generations of law enforcement leaders.
Students represent Flagler at American Association of University Women camp
Arwen Frye, Haley Ritter, Haley Ryman, Josephina Silano and Alyssa Thompson, representing Buddy Taylor Middle School, Indian Trails Middle School and Imagine School at Town Center, traveled to the Palm Beach State Campus in Boca Raton to the American Association of University Women’s Tech Trek on June 10 to 14. They joined fifty-nine more girls sponsored by AAUW branches across Florida to participate in STEM-based classes.

18 graduate from Palm Coast Citizen's Academy
Eighteen Palm Coast residents graduated in June from the Palm Coast Citizen’s Academy, a program created to educate residents about the ins and outs of their city government.
The graduating class, which is the 43rd in the program’s history, spent five weeks learning about city departments and visiting City Hall, main Fire Station 25 and Water Treatment Plant No. 3. The class also attended a Palm Coast City Council meeting together.
This sessions graduates were Alan Capshaw, Bert Cordwell, Peggy Cordwell, Mark Ellison, Mary Erickson, Sharon Erickson, Vern Erickson, Mark Leo, Terri Maga, Kathy Reichard-Ellavsky, Cherrie Retamozzo, Don Tardif, Joan Tardif, Constance Wolfson, Sidney Wykretowicz, Stan Wykretowicz and Stan Wykretowicz. Palm Coast resident writes book
Palm Coast resident Chris McKenna has written a new account of Jesus Christ’s adoptive father, released just before Father’s Day, according to a news release. “Poppa: A Fictional Biography of Joseph of Nazareth,” is now available at bookstores and online. After decades of non-fiction writing, McKenna has stepped into the world of imagination.
“'Poppa' sure is different from quantitative analysis,” he said in the release.
The cover art for the novel comes from Michael Gleason, a member of the Flagler County Art League and the Community Chorus of Palm Coast.
Christ Lutheran Church of Bunnell celebrates installation of new assistant pastor
Christ Lutheran Church of Bunnell welcomed many visitors to the service on Sunday, June 10, as they celebrated the installation of John Johnson to the position of assistant pastor, according to a news release.
John Johnson, a longtime member of Christ Lutheran Church, is attending seminary at the Institute of Lutheran Theology out of Brookings, South Dakota.
FWC scholarship recipients
The 2018 Flagler Woman's Club scholarship recipients were honored Wednesday, June 13, at a luncheon at the club. The recipients were: Matthew Mrnacaj, Allison Huggins, Allie Marino, Margaret O'Mahoney and Jackson Courson. Isabella Scarcella was the HOBY recipient.
Charmettes award scholarship to FPC graduate
The St. Johns-Putnam-Flagler County Chapter of The Charmettes Inc. presented its 2018 college scholarship to Namiah Simpson, a graduate of Flagler Palm Coast High School. Simpson graduated with a 4.2 GPA, was State Champion Track and Field Hurdler and relay team member and was a member of Ebony Society, HOSA Medical Club, Student Athletic Advisory Council and Delta Gems. She has served as the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church of Palm Coast Sunday School Youth Superintendent, Usher Ministry, Youth News Anchor, Choir, Dance Ministry and Youth Ministry and has been awarded over seven different scholarships. She plans to attend Southeastern University to major in nursing.
