It's not every day that zombies invade Flagler Beach.
But on Saturday, Oct. 28, 10 teams of the undead showed up to compete in Flagler Volunteer Services' "The Walking Bed" race. While it was the eighth-annual bed race event, the new zombie theme added excitement to the costumes.
"They've really gone to town this year," said Josephine S. L’Heureux, Flagler Volunteer Services special events coordinator. "Normally it's just [called] 'Flagler Fun Coast Bed Race,' but this year we wanted to do something to kind of stir it up because we're so close to Halloween."
The race teams were made up of service clubs from Matanzas High School and Flagler Palm Coast High School, as well as a few local businesses. Each team raced individually to complete four stations of challenges before crossing the finish line to earn their personal time score.
The judges at the event were Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly, Flagler County Commissioners Nate McLaughlin and David Sullivan and Flagler Beach Mayor Linda Provencher.

Third Place - Hilton Garden Inn - "Hilltop Hilton Zombie Hunters"
Dead Last - Flagler Lifeguards - "Frankenstein's Slab"

Most Creative - Beachside Bliss - "The Killer Waves"
Funniest - FPC Leo Club - "The Grateful Undead"
What Were You Thinking - MHS Interact Club - "IT"
Flagler Beach Fire and Rescue raised $330 for the event, earning the Fat Sack Award.
The Walking Bed was hosted by Flagler Volunteer Services, the Kiwanis Club of Flagler County, the Wheels in Motion Car Club and the city of Flagler Beach.
