Sidelines: David Bossardet named FPC wrestling coach

David Bossardet, a former wrestler at Flagler Palm Coast who placed at the state championships, is taking over the storied program.

“This job means everything to me,” said Bossardet, who has stepped down as an assistant principal at FPC to be the Bulldogs head wrestling coach. He will teach physical education at the school.

Bossardet replaces Zach Sanford, who led the Bulldogs for the past four seasons.

Bossardet’s brother, Bobby Bossardet, is FPC’s new principal, which does not allow David to continue as an assistant principal at the school, he said. Both brothers wrestled for Steve DeAugustino, who led the Bulldogs to three state championships and two runner-up finishes before becoming athletic director in 2007.

Bobby Bossardet replaced DeAugustino as the team’s head coach. Now it’s David’s turn.

“This is something that has been on my mind since I moved back here in 2011,” he said. “Every time (the job) comes up, it’s something I consider. FPC wrestling has been very good to me and my family.”

David Bossardet wrestled at LaBette Community College in Parsons, Kansas, and was an assistant wrestling coach at the school for four years. Before becoming an assistant principal at FPC this past year, he worked in the district office, overseeing student discipline and then as the district’s safety specialist for three years.

“I think he’s going to run a great program,” DeAugustino said. “He knows the sport and how to coach it. The bonus is he knows the school and the county. He knows what the expectations are.”

David Bossardet said DeAugustino has been a mentor to him since he was an eighth grader at Buddy Taylor Middle School.

“I’ve looked up to him my whole life,” Bossardet said. “For him to entrust me to run this program, I don’t take lightly. I know this program is something he holds dearly to his heart. I know there’s high expectations, and I’ve got to be prepared to meet those expectations, not only winning, but representing the program as it should be represented.”

He credits Sanford with bringing quality athletes into the program with good morals and do things the right way.

“That will not change,” Bossardet said. “I have three expectations. They lift weights, they wrestle and they go to class. And I’m going to remind them of that every day. If they do that to the standard I expect, a lot of the other stuff will take care of itself.”

BUCS' BIG DAY

Mainland advanced to the championship game at the "Swamp Shootout," a 7-on-7 tournament at University of Florida on June 22. Twenty-eight high school football teams competed in the tourney. The Bucs defeated Rockledge and Orlando Jones on the way to the title game where they fell to Carrollwood Day 17-15.

HAGSTROM HONORED

FPC weightlifting coach Duane Hagstrom was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 3A Boys Weightlifting Coach of the Year. The Bulldogs won the Class 3A state championship in April.

PATRIOTIC WORKOUT

Matanzas football will hold its Red, White and Blue Day on July 1 from 7-10 a.m. The Pirates will hold a workout that honors a fallen solder. Games and lunch will follow.
