After securing their first win of the season and their first win under new head coach Don Mathews, the Pirates (1-3) lost to Treasure Coast 35-7 on the night of Friday, Sept. 21, at Treasure Coast High School.
Treasure Coast scored 21 first-quarter points and raced to a 35-0 halftime lead.
With a running clock in the second half, Pirates senior Branden Gilyard put Matanzas on the board with a 90-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Despite the tough season, Gilyard has been the Pirates' most consistent player so far. He scored twice in Matanzas' come-from-behind win against Seabreeze. He scored on a 46-yard run and returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown against the Sandcrabs.
However, this season has been a difficult one for the Pirates, who entered 2018 on the heels of the most successful senior class in school history. Many of the Pirates of the roster, including the starters, are underclassmen.
On offense, the Pirates are averaging 8 points per game. On defense, the Pirates have surrendered 31.3 points per game — but in their three losses, they gave up 39.3 ppg.
