Anyone who listens to Rich Carroll on WNZF might not know that he has been working hard since December 2016 to lose 70 pounds so far.
The 38-year-old assistant news and sports director said he felt inspired to make the transformation in part after his father survived esophagus cancer.
“If my dad can beat cancer, why can’t I beat obesity?” Carroll said.
After his uncle and aunt previously died from cancer, Carroll said he took a step back and realized how much his weight was affecting him physically.
“Your own mortality kind of stares you in the face,” he said. “I did not want to go out like that. I just wanted to set myself up to be athletic and healthier.”
The turning point for him occurred when he was a ring announcer for a boxing match in the Hammock.
“I used to be an athlete when I was younger,” he said. “Just seeing these guys in the ring really motivated me to get back in shape.”
After that, Carroll started working out two to three hours a day, which included running three miles a day and training in boxing, Kung Fu and Martial Arts. He also modified his diet.
Now, at 175 pounds, Carroll said he hasn’t been in such good shape since high school.
