The Smiths become one at the place they often spend the most time.
Wearing a traditional white wedding dress. Jennifer Smith was escorted to her wedding in a white limousine. But this was no ordinary wedding: Instead of walking down the aisle, she walked from the pitcher’s mound to home plate. Instead of an arrangement of flowers, there was an arrangement of packages of sunflower seeds.
This past weekend, Smith — who never played or watched sports growing up — found herself exchanging vows and marrying longtime boyfriend Greg Smith at home plate on Saturday May 27, at the Indian Trails Sports Complex.
The Smiths have spent a large portion of the last nine years with the Palm Coast Little League at the ball fields. Greg has coached and umpired, and they both work the concession stand and have served on the league board.
“We have six kids, and five are usually playing at the same time,” Greg Smith said. “It was only right to do it at the field, and I think it went better than I could have imagined.”
League President Patrick Johnan — who also a stars as a famous character around Christmas season — presided over the wedding, which was a first on a baseball field.
“I actually expected it, and I thought it was beautiful,” Johnan said. “This is their home, where they are all the time with their kids, so why not, right?”
With family and friends in attendance, Greg stated that everyone loved their wedding location.
“If you're out here at any given time,” he said, “you'll most likely see one of us there.”
