The annual Back to School breakfast for Flagler County School teachers and staff, was Monday, Aug. 17. Photos Jacque Estes
Flagler County Superintendent Jacob Oliva was one of the first to arrive at school on Monday, Aug. 17.
“I was here at 6 a.m.,” he said.
Oliva wasn't the only one getting back on a school schedule; all of the Flagler County teachers and staff filled the parking lots at Flagler Palm Coast High School, for the annual Back to School Breakfast.
The FPC band, cheerleaders and mascots from the schools made sure everyone was awake and ready for another school year.
Inside the front gymnasium, information tables awaited. Kim Hale and Lauren Bennett, awash in pink, handed out information about the 5th-annual Pink Army 5K Run/Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness, Oct. 11. The pair are part of the Flagler County Sheriff's Office Police Athletic Program as well.
Buddy Taylor Elementary VPK teacher Carmen Paiz checked out most of the tables, including The Uniform Co. table, manned by Julia Fuentes.
“I like working with my 'babies,' and I am looking forward to getting back to work,” Paiz said.
Matanzas High School chemistry and environmental teacher Joe Estevez was ready for new students.
“I am ready for a new batch of fresh students to hopefully direct in the right way,” Estevez said.
For school psychologist Shoshanah Mercado, the new school year brings changes.
“I have had two schools in the past, Old Kings Elementary and FPC,” Mercado said. “This year, I will only be at FPC. I am excited to see how having one school is going to work and benefit the students.”
It's not all about their minds. Coach Richard Jeffries, physical education instructor at Wadsworth Elementary, is looking forward to an active year.
“I am looking forward to getting the students involved in exercise and a healthy lifestyle,” he said.
The next stop for the staff was the cafeteria, where breakfast awaited, with hugs and greeting from colleagues who hadn't seen each other for a couple of months, and all obviously ready to return to a daily schedule.
