Dogs of all sizes touted pink costumes and accessories, matching their two-legged friends, for the annual Pink Army 5K at Florida Hospital Flagler.
The 5K, which was held during the early morning hours of Sunday, Oct. 14, supports breast cancer awareness, education and screening through a partnership with Florida Hospital Flagler Foundation and the city of Palm Coast.
FHFF Director John Subers said between 1,000 and 1,200 runners, spectators and performers — including the Matanzas High School cheerleaders and Indian Trails Middle School spirit team — came out to support the cause.
“It’s very satisfying to know that so many people care about our community and raising money and awareness and just being a part of a great community,” Subers said. “It was a lot of fun.”
In addition to the chipped-timed 5K that kicked off at 7:45 a.m., there was a one-mile, pet-friendly fun walk and a kids fun run. Subers said the pink out your pup contest really took off, both last year and this year.
The Foundation started the Pink Army 5K initiative in 2010. All proceeds from the event will go toward assisting qualified patients in the community to help to pay for mammograms, breast ultrasounds, stereotactic breast biopsies, education and other specific diagnostic services.
