FBCA fifth graders win Odyssey
First Baptist Christian Academy fifth graders won first place Feb. 29 at the Florida Odyssey of the Mind Manatee Regional Competition at Gamble Rogers Middle School in St. Augustine. They will head to the state competition April 11, at the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando. The fourth grade team also won third place.
During the competition, teams solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.
FBCA cheerleaders take first
The First Baptist Christian Academy competitive cheer team took first place in the Florida Cheer and Dance Association’s Daytona Dazzler on Feb. 29. The cheerleaders are coached by Casey Goff.
Old Kings hosts math competition
Keanin Striplin won first place in Old Kings Elementary School’s third grade math competition in the last week of February. Lauren Rutledge finished second, Chad Colby third. Teachers used incentives, played games and came up interesting tricks to teach the students their multiplication facts, according to Media Specialist Kim Weeks. Rachel Bovino helped coordinate the competition.
Matanzas serves green eggs and ham for breakfast
Flagler County Schools Food and Nutrition Services celebrated National School Breakfast Week with a celebration of Dr. Seuss Day on what would have been his 116th birthday, March 2. To celebrate, students were offered green eggs and ham, made by layering chopped broccoli and diced ham and adding eggs and cheese into a muffin tin and then baked.
Studies show that children who eat school breakfast are more likely to perform better academically and also maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Mr. and Miss Matanzas tickets on sale
The Mr. and Miss Matanzas pageant, hosted by the Matanzas Student Government Association, will be 7 p.m. Thursday, April 9, at the Pirate Auditorium. Tickets, $5 for adults and $3 for students, are on sale at https://pirates32137.booktix.com/.
