For the last 24 years, the African American Cultural Society has educated the community in Flagler County of the rich culture of African ancestry and the contributions African Americans have made to the nation and mankind. The AACS, a nonprofit 501c3, held its annual cookout at the Hammock Community Center, Saturday, Sept. 5.
The AACS, founded in 1991, has held a luncheon every year at different community parks around Flagler County as a social event for the members and community. The organization started with no more than 20 members, and since has grown to over 200.
“We started the organization for the children,” founder Lorenzo Jones said. “I am proud of the progression we have shown,”
President Stephanie Ecklin is reaching out to the youth in Flagler County to raise money for the Youth Black History Reality Program Scholarship. In 2014, $5,000 was raised in scholarships for Flagler County’s graduating high school seniors. This year Ecklin’s goal is to raise $10,000.
“As the youngest president this organization has ever had, I would like to reach out to the younger generations in Flagler County for their support, to continue the legacy of educating the community on African American contributions and culture,” Ecklin said.
The program has sponsored over 500 children in the last 10 years.
