Boy Scouts Troops 386 Color Guard
Flag retirement ceremony
Christopher Conlon, at age 16, has achieved earning the rank of Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 386. To achieve the new ranking each Eagle Scout candidate must complete a community service project. For Conlon, he decided to give back to the veterans in Flagler County. Conlon chose VFW Post 8696, who helps sponsor Boy Scout Troop 386, to replace the old flag retiring pit that is no longer ideal and functional.
A retiring of the colors ceremony was held on Sunday, Oct. 4, at VFW Post 8696 with donated flags from the community. Christopher had the honor of placing the flags into the pit with the help of his father, Assistant Scoutmaster, Mark Conlon.
Christopher put $1,200 of his own money towards the building of the fire pit. He set the idea into motion in February. The finished pit, with the help of other Boy Scout Troop 386 members, was completed in late July. Once the ground was leveled the actual laying of the blocks took only three days to complete.
“I wanted to give back to our community and to the veterans who served our country,” Christopher Conlon said.
Christopher is looking at a bright future ahead. Already he has achieved the National Youth Leadership training, a 22 mile hike in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, a 50 mile canoe trip in New York and volunteered 300 hours of community service. He is currently looking into schools such as West Point Military Academy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Rochester Institute of Technology.
