Multiple residents contacted the Flagler County Sheriff's Office on Monday, July 23, to report that they received calls and voicemails from someone posing as a Sheriff's Office corporal, according to a news release by the FCSO

Residents reported receiving calls and voicemails from 386-313-4911. The voicemail contained a male voice identifying as Cpl. Joseph Barile from the FCSO. This person advised residents that "he needed to speak with them in regards to an urgent matter that required immediate attention," according to the release. The person provided a call back number of 386-237-6392, extension 19.

Other residents told deputies that when asking the "corporal" to identify himself and spell his name, he attempted to but then became flustered and hung up.

When FCSO detectives called the number, they found a voicemail set up where the person does represent himself as an employee of the Sheriff's Office.

The man on the phone is not Cpl. Joseph Barile.

“Our deputies are out in the community, and scammers are trying to use that against us by impersonating
them. The best defense against this type of crime is awareness,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in a release. “Don’t become
a victim. When in doubt, call the Sheriff’s Office and let us verify the information you’ve been given.”
