Many of us can relate to the following situation: You drive home from work, or you walk your dog, and you notice that you have a new neighbor who has just moved into a house nearby.
So you think: I should introduce myself.
But, you talk yourself out of it. It’s probably not a good time. Maybe it will be awkward. I’ll just wait around for the right moment.
Well, next week is the right moment.
On Feb. 15, the Observer will publish its inaugural Welcome to the Neighborhood edition, a pull-out section filled with information that will be especially useful for new move-ins, answering questions such as the following:
Where are the parks, libraries and hospitals in our community?
Who are my elected officials, and how can I contact them?
What’s the history of my new city?
The Observer invites you to pick up a copy of the Feb. 15 edition, pull out the special section and knock on that new neighbor’s door. You could say something like this:
“Hi! I got this in our local newspaper, but it’s really for you. Welcome to the neighborhood.”
A big friendly smile, a neighborhood newspaper: the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Growth is often a divisive issue in our community, but being a good neighbor shouldn’t be. This initiative won’t solve our problems, but it could multiply our community spirit and help new move-ins feel more welcome.
