A group of six volunteers drove out to the home of Maureen Rhein at 938 Bentwood Lane in Port Orange to help with the cleanup of her yard after Hurricane Irma.
Boy Scout Troop 403 in Ormond Beach made the drive to help clean up loose shingles, rake up debris and dispose of it all. In addition, volunteer Belinda Collins was on hand in a United Way shirt to help the cause.
“I moved here about 25 years ago and started volunteering then until I found something to do, and now I’m back again because it’s something that’s needed.” Collins said.
Rhein’s house was also a victim of damage during last year’s Hurricane Matthew, so she appreciates the help.
She notes the City of Port Orange has done an excellent job in assisting those who have needed it since Irma hit last weekend.
“I’m just very appreciative,” Rhein said. “I’ve had some damage to my roof with the shingles coming off, and lots of debris. The whole backyard needed to be cleaned and I’m thankful for all of the help from the city and all of the volunteers.”
Troop 403 in Ormond Beach sent two of its leaders and four younger scouts to help the effort.
The troop is undergoing several community service efforts this weekend to help with those affected by Hurricane Irma.
This group of volunteers was organized by the United Way of Volusia/Flagler counties, who had around 30 locations planned out ahead of time of which to send volunteers.
The United Way insists more volunteers are needed to address the widespread damage to the community. Any individuals or groups interested in serving their community should contact Francine Martin, volunteer center coordinator, at 386 275-1948.
