Flagler Humane Society posts $1,000 reward for information on cat’s abuser

The reward will be given to the first person to provide information leading to the conviction of the culprit.

Two young girls found an emaciated cat wrapped in a blanket by Cattlemen’s Hall at the Flagler County Fairgrounds.

The girls found the cat on Wednesday, May 24 while attending a cheerleading event. The Flagler County Sheriff's office was called.

“I believe the deputy picked up the cat and it meowed,” Flagler Humane Society executive director Amy Carotenuto said.

Flagler Animal Services officer Bryan Denker responded to the scene and took the animal back to the humane society.

Denker texted a photo of the animals to Carotenuto, who said at first she wasn’t sure what she was looking at or what species she was looking at on her phone.

“The cat had laid there a couple of days and hadn’t eaten in some time before that,” Carotenuto said.

The cat was determined to be about 10 years old by the veterinarian who performed the necropsy (autopsy for animals). The animal was in extreme distress and barely alive and it was determined euthanasia was the humane action to take.

Carotenuto has questions about how the animal came to be located in such a remote area. Cattlemen’s Hall is at the Flagler County Fairgrounds on County Road 13 and gated.

Then there’s the blanket. She wonders why someone wrapped the cat in a blanket and left it rather than bringing it into the shelter where it might have been saved.

“I would like to hear the circumstances,” Carotenuto said.

The humane society is offering a $1,000 reward for the first person who provides information that leads to a conviction of the person who did this. Anyone with information can call the humane society at 445-1814 or Flagler Animal Services at 445-1188 and ask for Carotenuto or Katie Share.
