Sheriff Rick Staly deputized a 9-year-old Palm Coast boy Jan. 11 during a special visit to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. Staly performed a swearing-in “ceremony” and made Cameron Fulling an honorary deputy and then took him and his mom, Melisa, on a tour of the Sheriff’s Operations Center.

Cameron got to experience a firearms simulator, hold a SWAT team firearm, put on a SWAT team vest and climb up into an armored FCSO SWAT team vehicle. The tour was initiated by close family friend Donald Brock, an FCSO courthouse deputy. “He’s been through a lot. He’s a good kid,” Brock said.
Cameron and his family have spent the last six years battling Cameron’s brain cancer, since just before he turned 4. He had brain surgery in March 2010 to have the first tumor removed. Since then, the cancer has continued to reoccur. He has undergone multiple surgeries as well as chemotherapy and more than 50 radiation treatments.
Unfortunately, just days ago, Cameron’s family learned he has developed yet another tumor that is penetrating his brain. His doctors are trying to find options and his family says he is fighting for his life.
“It is very tragic for any child to have to battle with this horrible disease," Staly said. "Cameron is a real fighter and today I am proud to make him a part of my crimefighting team.”
