What happens when the one you looked up to begins to look up to you? For Seabreeze senior Brett Cormier and his father, Dana, their roles have somewhat switched, and it has made Brett a better young man and ball player.
Dana still suffers from partial paralysis on the left side of his body after suffering a major stroke that landed him in a coma at the end of 2014.
While getting through recovery, Dana credited his son for helping him get through treatments and physical therapy. He would go and watch him play as often as he could.
“That meant the world to me,” Cormier said. “Words can’t explain how motivating it was to hear that I actually helped him get through that tough time. Since then, I’ve played as hard as I could for him.”
I got to see Brett play this past weekend, and it sure looked like he was motivated by something. He hit three triples — yes, three triples — against Matanzas in a 10-7 losing effort. I had never heard of nor seen anyone hit three triples in a game.
After talking with Cormier, it made a little more sense. After hitting those balls, he ran fast and extremely hard around those bases.
Despite all of the cheers and opposing voices, Brett says he tends to only hear his dad’s voice. If my best friend and role model — who’s admitted that my playing abilities inspired him — and if he comes to my games just to see me play, I’m sure I would also play with so much more passion.
Brett Cormier has already committed to play at Daytona State College at the next level, so his best friend, role model and dad will continue to draw inspiration from his game.
