To be ready for the start of the holiday season, it’s sometimes necessary to start early. Especially if you decorate your lawn with more than 100 inflatable figures, laser lights, an illuminated walkway and lights synchronized to music.
David and Brandy Schoolcraft, and their kids Dillon and Cheyenne, are inviting the community to drive by or walk the paths through the decorations at their home at 111 Pine Creek Court. They planned to have them completed by Thanksgiving night.
Their neighbors enjoy the display, so the Schoolcrafts want to get the word out to others and spread the Christmas spirit.
David Schoolcraft said he has noticed visitors taking pictures in past years, so they try to have good photo opportunities along the paths, such as a candy cane arch and a Santa with a countdown clock.
“When we first started the neighbors thought we were nuts,” the mom said. “But they’ve come around. I love the see the kids’ faces and the adults’ faces.”
The lights will be timed to the Christmas music on radio station 99.5 for those driving by who want the full experience.
Brandy Schoolcraft traces her decorating urge back to her mother, who painted figures cut out of wood for their display. David also has a history of decorating. As a fireman in Indiana (he’s now retired) he helped decorate a haunted barn for Halloween each year.
They also go all out for Halloween, so they have a lot of decorations to store. They have an attic in their garage, as well as a small barn on their property.
Asked how long they spend setting up the decorations, the Schoolcrafts have a good laugh. But to give an idea, they say they start on Nov. 1.
As they are getting older, it takes longer to get the decorations out and put them away, they say. A Boy Scout troop helped them put away the Halloween decorations this year.
They had one unexpected guest while the Halloween decorations were up — a storm named Matthew. They put the inflatables down for the storm and used bags of mulch to hold them in the wind. They lost little in the way of decorations, but the roof of their house was damaged.
“The hurricane damaged our roof but it didn’t change our spirits,” said David Schoolcraft.
