There are 157 new faces in Flagler Schools this year, and nearly half were introduced at the School Board meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 16. Nearly 90 of the new employees are instructional staff. Depending on the number of late registering students that number may increase.
Brittany Franklin, Flagler Palm Coast High School, and Kobi Kane, Matanzas High School, were introduced to the board by their principals, Dusty Sims and Dr. Earl Johnson, and given their new school board blazers, green for Brittany and blue for Kobi.
Many of the 25 students who attended the “Bring Your A Game” summer camp were also at the meeting. The camp was a student and community engagement opportunity to help the students get a good start on the school year and start thinking about their future.
During the camp the students focused on three things – “ I know who I am, I know where I am going, and I know how I am going to get there.”
Before she introduced Arnold Anderson, who wrote the proposal for the camp, and Sandra Felicia, camp director, Lynette Shott director of student services turned to the students in the seats reserved for them.
“I want you to notice how many of our graduates we like to hire,” Shott said.
Felicia spoke about the guest speakers who spoke to the campers about their jobs.
“I told them I didn’t want them just to talk about their jobs, but how they got to where they are in their careers,” Felicia said. “The camp was 100% a community volunteer effort.”
An internship program was implemented to help Flagler students make the transition from the classroom to careers. The idea for the program began after months of discussion and implementation by Flagler School alumnae Maeve Dineen and Lauren Umpenhour.
Maeve, a biochemistry and molecular biology major at Mercer University, led the logistics of the development of the program. Lauren, advertising and public relations major at the University of Central Florida, focused on the marketing efforts of the internship program with the goal to recruit college level students, and raise awareness within the community about the new opportunities.
