Florida Hospital Flagler donates supplies to lifeguards
Florida Hospital Flagler has donated medical and first aid supplies — including gloves, face masks, ammonia, alcohol pads, gauze and biohazard containment materials — to the city of Flagler Beach’s Ocean Rescue Services.
“Our lifeguards are the first responders to beachgoers who fall victim to sudden illnesses and injuries,” Flagler Beach Parks and Recreation Director Tom Gillin said in a Florida Hospital Flagler press release. “The hospital donates these supplies each year and we are so grateful for the support. This donation allows us to continue providing the highest quality of safety services to all visitors to our beautiful beach.”
Flagler Beach Lifeguards have about 10-15 minor first aid cases each day, Gillin said.
“These items are essential to what we do,” he said. “When someone is injured on the beach, our lifeguards can use the donated supplies to help right away. It makes a real difference.”

Surf 97.3 FM comes to Flagler Beach, Palm Coast
Flagler Beach-based radio station Surf 1700 AM will expand this June to reach Palm Coast as well as Flagler Beach on a new FM frequency, playing music that “brings to mind memories of being on vacation, hanging out by the water, or enjoying a backyard cookout,” according to a Surf 97.3 FM press release.
The new Surf 97.3 FM, a not-for-profit, locally-owned station created by Vern Shank, will feature music Shank calls “sunshine pop and happy, feel-good, upbeat oldies … surf music, reggae, ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s rock with a summertime vibe, trop rock and beach country,” according to the press release.
“I truly believe that this music is what this town is all about,” Shank said in the release.
Local author Tim Baker, a volunteer Surf 97.3 DJ, will also host a Friday-night show playing lesser-known tunes by famous artists.
The station maintains a partnership with the Flagler Beach Historical Museum, and plays daily programs about the region’s history, broadcasting from the 86-year old Flagler Beach pier, according to the release.
The AM station was created in June, 2013, along with the station’s website, flaglerbeachradio.com.
