Flagler County Sheriff’s deputies, along with officers from both the Bunnell and Flagler Beach police departments, are taking part in the statewide “Click It or Ticket” campaign, slated to run through March 15.

For the next two weeks, agencies will be exercising zero-tolerance on seat belt use. Florida Law requires all drivers and front-seat passengers to wear a seat belt regardless of their age. Passengers under the age of 18 must also have a seat belt on regardless of where they sit in a vehicle.

If you have a child riding in your motor vehicle that is 5 years of age or younger, the penalties for failure to properly secure the occupant fall under Child Restraint laws, which are more severe than seat belt laws.

For children up to 3 years old, they must be properly secured in a separate carrier, or in the vehicle manufacturer’s integrated child seat.

For children 4 through 5 years old, they must be properly secured in a separate carrier, an integrated child seat or a seat belt may be used.

All seat belt violation tickets are issued to a vehicle’s driver, except for front-seat passengers over 18 years of age who may be issued a ticket. A motorist found not wearing a seat belt may be issued a $116 citation. For child-restraint violations, the driver can be issued a $166 citation and receive three points on their license.

“We pride ourselves in being able to participate in the ‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign and strongly encourage motorists to buckle up every time they get in their car, and to make sure that young children are properly secured,” said Sheriff James L. Manfre. “Our goal is to get the message out countywide that seat belts save lives.”.
