An Ormond Beach driver, Richard Anderson, 61, was involved in a traffic accident this morning, Jan. 30, that resulted in the death of a Port Orange man.

Anderson, driving a 1994 GMC pickup truck, was traveling southbound on Interstate 95 when a 1999 Honda, driven by a 46-year-old driver from Port Orange whose name is being withheld pending notification to his next of kin, struck the back of Anderson’s truck.

The collision occurred for unknown reasons, and both cars then stopped on the side of the road. But the driver of the Honda fled the scene, walking onto the Dunn Avenue overpass. When a state trooper arrived and approached the driver, the driver began to run toward the edge of the overpass.

The trooper tried to stop him, grabbing his jacket, but the driver got free and continued running, until he either fell or jumped off the side of the overpass, landing on the grass shoulder below.

Police are still unsure whether the driver jumped from the overpass, or if he fell in an attempt to flee. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The investigation is still underway.
