Twelve hours after the Flagler County School District narrowed its list of applicants for superintendent from five to three — Flagler County Schools Assistant Superintendent Jacob Oliva, Osceola County School District Assistant Superintendent Pamela Tapley, and Hamilton Township School District Superintendent James Parla being the finalists — the School Board received word that Parla had withdrawn his application.
“I emailed him last night that he made the short list and to contact me for more information,” School Board Attorney Kristy Gavin said. “Occasionally, you do have candidates who do back down when they find who the list is narrowed to.”
Gavin will add St. Lucie Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Kevin Perry to the list of interviewees in replacement of Parla.
“Unfortunately, Mr. Perry would be 12 hours behind everyone else being contacted,” she said, “but not sure that’s of a significant matter.”
The applicant to be hired will replace Janet Valentine, who is currently out of work following a stroke. Oliva has assumed most of Valentine’s responsibilities in the interim.
Twenty people applied for the job.
Gavin said the change should not affect the School Board’s goal of choosing a new superintendent by Feb. 4.
