Five-year-old Killian Korkes wanted to start her new year out right by donating her hair to children with diseases. She has seen commercials on TV of other sick, hairless children who have donated, and she said to her mom, Kelly, "Momma, I want to make the sick children smile."
Korkes bravely went to The Hair Cuttery on New Year's Eve and donated all 11 inches of her hair, with a huge smile. Many of her family and friends have since been inspired and have also donated to Locks of Love.
Former Miss Flagler County to speak at eating disorder symposium
In the United States, 20 million women and 10 million men suffer from a clinically significant eating disorder at some time in their life. COPE (Community Outreach for the Prevention of Eating Disorders) will host its annual public health symposium for education/awareness and prevention 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Renew Yoga Studio, 220 S. Beach St., in Daytona Beach.
Former Miss Flagler County Amanda Dack, will be among panel members. Dack battled an eating disorder in high school and used her platform as Miss Flagler County to raise awareness from her personal experience.
The panel will be led by Benjamin O’Keefe, who challenged Abercrombie and Fitch’s size-discrimination policies. Other panel members include Debbie Yarbrough and Andrea Rojas.
