Bob and Sally Lowry, of Palm Coast, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary Jan. 21.
Enlisted naval corpsman Lowry met Navy Cadet Corps Nurse Officer (Lieutenant) LaJune Miller in Bethesda, Md., in early 1953. Both were in the wedding party of mutual friends while stationed at the naval hospital. They were quickly attracted to one another, but faced a problem: Enlisted personnel were not allowed to date officers, and once the chief nurse became aware of the relationship, she told the couple to stop seeing each other or face the consequences.
Unbeknownst to the couple, the consequences had already been implemented.
Lowry received orders to be stationed in a MASH unit in Korea. Pre-shipment station duty was served at Camp Pendleton, Calif. On the trip out west, Miller took leave and the couple stopped at her girlhood home in San Angelo, Texas where they were married on a cold January day.
The couple took the long route to California, honeymooning in Monterey, Mexico. Lowry served the next two years in Korea, and Miller (now Lowry) completed her service duty in Bethesda, and then joined her new husband's family in Michigan until his return.
The couple's commitment to the Navy continued through both active and reserve duty until Lowry achieved his officer standing and matched rank with his wife.
In the meantime, the couple raised three children in homes they established in Colorado, California, Michigan and Iowa before enjoying retirement in a home they built in Palm Coast in 2003.

City Repertory Theatre will present its first production of 2014, "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged,” with shows 7:30 p.m. Jan. 17,18, 24 and 25, and 2 p.m. Jan. 19 and 26, at its newly renovated theatre at 160 Cypress Point Parkway, Suite B207, within the Hollingswoth Gallery complex.
“The Complete Works” is a farce in which all 37 of Shakespeare plays are presented in one-and-a-half hours. Director John Sbordone said it’s the zaniest, wackiest show he's ever directed.
“The presentation of Hamlet frontwards, backwards and at two times the speed is simply insane comedy,” Sbordone said. “It’s hard to get through rehearsal without side-splitting laughter.”
The cast includes CRT favorites Josh Fagundes, John Birney and Rob Long. The three twentysomething actors are engaged in physical comedy that includes gymnastics, cross-dressing and mock sword fights.

Palm Coast UMC hosts “The Art of Marriage”
Palm Coast United Methodist Church, at 5200 Belle Terre Parkway, will host a marriage seminar called “The Art of Marriage” 6:30-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7.
This seminar, open to all couples, is a video experience that combines dramatic stories, real-life testimonies, expert interviews, humorous vignettes and other teaching methods.
The program will continue 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8. The cost of the seminar is $40 per couple and includes study materials, Saturday lunch, and Saturday evening dinner dance which will begin at 6 p.m.
The weekend is completed with a vow renewal ceremony Sunday, Feb. 9, at all services. Certificates for those participating will be handed out following each service. Free child care is provided upon request.

Marshall Frank, 30-year retired police captain/homicide detective from Miami-Dade, now the author of 12 books, including six novels, one book of memoirs and five books of nonfiction, will host a seminar for beginning authors 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Hampton Inn, 150 Flagler Plaza Drive. The North East Florida Jazz Association, of Palm Coast, will present saxophone legend and be-bop pioneer Lou Donaldson in concert 2:30-4:30 p.m. Jan. 19, at the Museum of Arts and Sciences, 352 S. Nova Road, Daytona Beach. Tickets are $30 for members; $35 for non-members. Call 445-1329.
