The Florida Department of Education has completed its analysis of more than 19,000 comments received during last year’s public review of the Florida Standards in English language arts and mathematics, and, in response, it has recommended a total of 98 changes and additions to the state standards.

In accordance with an executive order from Gov. Rick Scott, FDOE conducted its month-long review through three public meetings, as well as email and website contributions. More than 14 hours of public hearings were held, and a third-party firm was hired to review all 19,000 comments submitted throughout the process, from parents, teachers, administrators and other stakeholders.

The 98 proposed changes and additions include 46 changes to English language arts and mathematics standards and the addition of 52 calculus standards.

Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart will present the recommended changes to the State Board of Education at its Feb. 18 meeting, in Miami.

“I appreciate all of the feedback from teachers, parents, administrators and people across the state on Florida’s English language arts and mathematics standards,” said Commissioner Pam Stewart. “With your input, we have strengthened our standards to ensure they are the best and highest standards, so that all Florida students graduate from high school prepared for success in college, career and in life.”
