A suspected carjacker fleeing deputies smashed a stolen Toyota Corolla into three palm trees at the Interstate 95 entrance ramp from Palm Coast Parkway early Sunday morning, and he kept on going, ditching the car and taking off on foot.
A Sheriff’s dog named Kaos found 24-year-old Jacksonville resident Dyson Anthony Graham, grabbing ahold of him as he hid under a dumpster outside the Golden Corral on Cypress Edge Drive, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office news release.
The armed carjacking was Wednesday night, at the Florida Mall in Orlando.
St Johns County deputies recognized the stolen, black 2009 Corolla early Sunday morning, and the chase began.
The car led deputies south on I-95 at up to 115 mph, according to a charging affidavit. It entered Flagler County at about 4 a.m. Sunday, and Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies were waiting with stop-sticks when it left the highway for Palm Coast Parkway, according to the news release.
But the driver avoided the stop-sticks, continuing across Palm Coast Parkway to get back onto the interstate. Then he lost control, striking the trees, and took off running.
When deputies got to the car, though, it wasn’t empty. Inside, they found a 16-year-old girl who had been reported missing in Hillsborough County. In the car's open center console was a loaded .32 caliber revolver, according to a charging affidavit. Deputies will charge the girl with possession of stolen property, according to the news release.
Graham was charged with possession of stolen property, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, carrying a concealed firearm and resisting arrest without violence. The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office may file additional charges. Graham has at least six past felony convictions on charges including burglary, larceny, carrying a concealed weapon and posession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to the charging affidavit.
Graham and the teen will be questioned by investigators from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. They will be booked at the Flagler County Detention Facility.
