Landscape and gardening center Nature Scape’s is celebrating its 30th year in business.
Marylou Baiata opened Nature Scape’s, which also has a gift shop and a florist with worldwide delivery through the 1-800-flowers network, in 1984.
“It’s a big milestone,” Baiata said, in a press release. “I started with a pickup truck and a shovel and now have a thriving landscape business and a 4.5-acre garden center. It’s amazing how far we’ve come.”
Baiata’s son, Chris Baiata, joined Nature Scape’s in 2007 and is now its general manager.
“We are seeing a new generation of customers, people I went to high school here with,” Chris Baiata said. “The business is coming full circle.”
Nature Scape’s focuses on sustainable Florida-friendly landscaping and added an ecological farm this past year, using organic growing practices and selling fresh produce and plants for resale in containers. The Nature Scape’s facility at 313 Old Brick Road in Bunnell also has a rescue center for birds, goats and chickens.

New bicycle maintenance stand coming to Bings Landing
PC Bike, the Bicycle Doctor and Flagler County have teamed up to place a bike-maintenance stand on the Mala Compra Trail at Bings Landing.
The stand, in the parking lot of Bings Landing near Captain’s BBQ, at 5862 N. Oceanshore Blvd., has an air pump, a repair rack and an assortment of tools on steel cables.
“Originally, I saw it out in San Diego,” said PC Bike co-owner Jake Scully.“We had put one at Waterfront Park with the city, and people liked that, so I got with the county and Tony Libretti at the Bicycle Doctor, and we kind of teamed up as friendly competitors to put one at Bings Landing at the trail at Mala Compra.”
The Bicycle Doctor and PC Bike purchased the stand together, and the county installed it, Scully said.
"I think that it is great that Bicycle Doctor and PC Bike are working in conjunction with Flagler County in Palm Coast to promote a fit and healthy place to live," Libretti said. "Mala Compra off-road trail has attracted many out-of-town cyclists that come and spend the day riding and dining at our local restaurants, and enjoy the other trails that the county has to offer."
The bike rack has a tough thermo plastic cover to protect users form the rain, Scully said, and the county placed a sign across the street so people know where it is.
“We just see it as a good way to help people enjoy cycling more,” Scully said.
New animal rescue organization forming in Palm Coast
Palm Coast residents JoAnn Smerdon and David L. Palmes are forming a nonprofit animal rescue organization called Kritters Incorporated.
“Our objective is to be of assistance with funding and location to showcase adoptable animals in a friendly, family-oriented atmosphere,” according to a Kritters press release.
Smerdon and Palmes are working on securing nonprofit status and hope to have IRS recognition as a nonprofit organization by the end of February.
