‘The secret is to let dogs know you love them," owner Jim Pinkstaff says.

A Pampered Pooch & Day Spa and Professional Pest Control Products, 295 S. Yonge St., celebrated its 40th year in business Monday with a ribbon-cutting given by the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Jim Pinkstaff, who owns the business along with his wife, April, attributes his years of success to “good quality and consistent service.” He said there are “no surprises” when a person picks up their dog.

Pinkstaff started working for his dad’s dog-grooming business in Boston when he was in high school, and it became his life’s work. The family moved the business to Ormond Beach in 1974, and the Pinkstaffs took over the business when his dad retired in 1991.

The pest-control portion of the business developed from providing flea and tick treatments for animals.

The most challenging part of the business is dealing with the dogs, Pinkstaff said, because they can be unpredictable.

“The first thing you have to do is let the dog know you love them,” he said. “If they know you love them, they know you won’t hurt them.”
