FLAGLER BEACH — The Flagler Beach Police Department has created a new initiative to help elderly, disabled or home-bound residents who live alone.

Residents who register for the Friends of Flagler Beach program will call the police department between 8 a.m. and noon Monday through Friday to check in and let the department know they’re okay.

The city also launched a program in January that allows residents to set up police home-watches while they're vacationing or out of town (CLICK HERE for that story).

In the Friends of Flagler Beach program, if the department doesn’t get a call from the resident, they’ll send an officer out to check on the resident. Police will contact residents on the weekends and will work out times for contacting each individual.

Program participants must give an officer permission to enter their home with a key, if needed, to make sure they are all right.

Applications for the Friends of Flagler Beach program can be picked up 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Flagler Beach Police Department, or they can be downloaded HERE.

Completed applications can be dropped off at the police department or mailed to the Flagler Beach Police Department at P.O. Box 36, Flagler Beach, Fla. 32136.

If you have any questions about the program, contact Captain Doughney at 517-2023.
