Palm Coast only utility in Northeast to win water award

Palm Coast's water utility was the only division to win the excellence award in a 19-county Northeast region.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is awarding Palm Coast its 2013 Plant Excellence Award for the city’s water treatment plant operation.

Palm Coast’s utility division is the only utility service to receive this year’s award in the FLDEP’s 19-county Northeast region, and 2013 is the fourth year since 2008 that the city’s plants were awarded.

The award is based on conservation, record-keeping, safety, emergency preparedness and staff training, and it will be presented Feb. 20 at the Florida Rural Water Association’s “Focus on Change” seminar, in Lake City.

Palm Coast’s water comes from a surficial aquifer and the deeper Floridan Aquifer and is treated at the city facilities that remove contaminants and soften the water for household use.

A new zero-liquid-discharge plant is being built at Water Plant 2 on Citation Boulevard and will open later this year. It will treat and recover up to 1.2 million gallons of water, which previously would have been waster, each day.
