Local football players and cheerleaders joined the Palm Coast United Methodist Church Sunday, Aug. 24, to study the playbook of Christian life and celebrate the upcoming season.
“For those of you who don’t care anything about football, we’re going to pray for you and ask God to forgive you,” said the Rev. Kevin James before introducing the title of his sermon “Study Your Playbook.”
He asked for help defining football from the players and cheerleaders from Matanzas High School and Bethune-Cookman University, affiliated with the United Methodist Church since 1924. Bethune-Cookman’s coaching staff and Flagler Palm Coast High School’s coach and a handful of his players were also in attendance.
“Football is about learning about life,” said Daniel Dillard, player for the Pirates. “All of my best friends are on the football team.”
Dillard introduced some of those friends and noted he might not have befriended them if it weren’t for football.
“Let me share some reasons for studying the Bible,” James said. “We need to study the Bible because we need to be better than we are, we need Christian fellowship and because we need to learn God’s word.”
He closed the sermon with a quote from legendary football coach Vince Lombardi: “Winning isn’t everything, but the will to win is.”
Flagler Sheriff recognizes three exemplary employees
Sheriff James L. Manfre presented three Flagler County Sheriff’s Office employees with an award for Employee of the Quarter last week during an afternoon ceremony.
Civil Clerk Nancy Birdsong was awarded Civilian of the Quarter and recognized for her dedication to her work. As the liaison between the Clerk of the Court and the Civil Division, Manfre said she has been instrumental in the implementation of paperless warrant processing.
Deputy Daniel Parthemore was awarded Deputy of the Quarter and recognized for his tenacious investigations leading to arrests and recovery of property which was returned to the victims. Recently, Parthemore, along with other members of his squad, participated in an investigation which led to the apprehension of a burglary suspect. The suspect committed multiple occupied residential burglaries and car break-ins. This apprehension resulted in the return of several hundred dollars in valuables.
Detention Deputy Nolie St. Fleur was awarded Detention Deputy of the Quarter and recognized for his professionalism, as he rarely calls out sick and is always on time for his scheduled shift. Manfre said St. Fleur is a dedicated employee who stands out among his peers and is an example for everyone to follow.
“These employees raise the bar when it comes to serving our community,” said Manfre. “They are true professionals and deserving of the award they received.”
