About four of every five child-safety seats are installed incorrectly, and car crashes are the number one killer on children between 1 and 12 nationwide, according to a city of Palm Coast news release.

To help protect local kids, the Palm Coast Fire Department will offer free car seat safety checks 1-4 p.m. Wednesday, April 23 at Fire Station 25 at 1250 Belle Terre Parkway.

“The Fire Department has had a car seat program for the past six years, and people are able to come to any city of Palm Coast fire station daily to have their car seats checked,” Firefighter/EMT Christopher Cottle, who manages the city’s program, said in the news release. “But this special event is designed to draw extra attention to the importance of car seat safety checks.”

Folk who stop by to have a child-safety seat checked should try to bring the car seat manual and the vehicle owner manual, if possible, but the Fire Department’s child passenger safety technicians will help show people the safest way to install a car seat even if the manuals have been lost.
