Local snags five-foot shark

Ormond Beach’s Luke Smith reeled in a dangerous catch Sept. 5, when he pulled a five-foot lemon shark in with his rod and reel, at North Shore Park, in Ormond by the Sea.

The fish was estimated at 50 pounds.

John Fitzgerald publishes family saga

Ormond by the Sea’s John Fitzgerald, writing under the penname Lawson Jack, published his latest novel, “The Pier,” last month, which is now available on Kindle.

An historical family-saga that spans the close of World War II to our country's bicentennial, the book takes place in Ormond by the Sea and includes several local landmarks, past and present.

“The novel was truly a labor of love, for my late parents are the lead characters,” Fitzgerald said. “I'm very proud of my family's namesake, our history, as well my hometown's throughout the many years. This novel, in all honesty, is a tribute to the community ... (in) hopes that many find its words an entertaining comfort and nostalgic journey through our past.”

Raise a healthy eater, with help from this food blog

Anne Myer, an Ormond Beach native, has moved back to the city after living out of state a few years, and so has her website, devoted to teaching children how to eat healthy, seasonal foods. The site has been named a blog of the month by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, as well as been featured in Rachel Ray’s Yum-o! Organization blog.
