Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a possible hand grenade lying in the roadway just before 6 p.m. Tuesday, at the intersection of eastbound Palm Coast Parkway and Belle Terre Parkway.

Deputies arriving at the scene immediately assessed the situation and closed the intersection and diverted vehicular and pedestrian traffic away from the area.

Deputies reported that the device appeared to be an intact hand grenade and contacted the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office’s bomb squad and requested their their assistance in removal of the device.

Bomb squad personnel from St. Johns County arrived on scene just after 7 p.m. and assessed the situation.

The crew then safely removed the device from the roadway, placed it in their bomb trailer and transported it to an undisclosed location, where a controlled detonation of the hand grenade was successfully performed.

Bomb squad personnel advised the Sheriff’s Office that the hand grenade appeared to be a live device with its safety locking pin and “spoon” in place.

Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a follow-up investigation in an attempt to determine how the device may have ended up in the roadway.
