Imagine losing your job. Now imagine losing your home.
For Nadine King, founder of the charitable organization Christmas Come True, it’s not hard to imagine because she regularly works closely with families in just those circumstances.
I talked to her on the evening of Monday, Nov. 25, and she asked if I could help get the word out that help is needed.
One family she is working with consists of a single mother with children ages 16, 13 and 9 — all good kids, King said. The mother recently left a crisis center and now, they’re living out of their car while the mother searches for a full-time job to afford car insurance and a permanent place to live.
“I have another woman with two teenage girls with an eviction notice,” King said. “She’s had a terrible car accident. An 18-wheeler slammed into her car, and she’s trying to find a job. … She was 18 days late with her rent, and they served her an eviction notice.”
King continued: “It’s not that they’re not good people or they’re lazy or they want to live on welfare — they don’t. They don’t want anything to do with it. But they can’t get above water.”
Her idea is that there are some people in the area with homes that are for rent or are otherwise unoccupied. Perhaps someone is willing to donate a home for six months to a year so that King and Christmas Come True can help families in transition?
