Sixty-nine years. That’s how long Jim Landon and Sally Sherman have combined to work in municipal government. And last week, both were honored by the Florida City and County Management Association at its annual conference and business meeting in Orlando.

Landon, city manager of Palm Coast, received the Career Excellence Award. Sherman, deputy county administrator for Flagler County, received the Assistant’s Excellence Leadership Award.

Landon began working in local government as a land-use planner in 1979 in Clark County, Nev. He later held planning positions in Colorado and Oklahoma. He eventually went on to hold city manager positions in Missouri, Oregon and Texas before moving to Palm Coast in 2007.

Landon was nominated by the city’s Leadership Internship Training Experience team. A letter was written by Mayor Jon Netts, endorsing Landon’s experience and skills and emphasizing his team approach to city management.

“The key words that appropriately describe Jim Landon in your association’s award criteria are ‘foster representative democracy’ and ‘initiate creative and successful programs,’” Netts wrote.

Netts mentioned projects completed in the city that are not normally undertaken as routine employee functions.

“The results have been astounding,” Netts continued. “Not only have employees grasped a better understanding of government and community issues, but they’ve also developed thoughtful, productive options and solutions.”

Sherman, who was also appointed as District 2 director for the FCCMA, has 11 siblings.

She began her career with a clerk/typing class and a part-time internship in Seminole County. She later became the deputy county manager in Seminole. Sherman came to Flagler County in 2008 from a position of assistant city manager and director of economic development in Deltona.

“Mrs. Sherman is a truly dedicated professional and an asset to our county,” said Craig Coffey, Flagler County’s administrator. “She has risen up the ranks through her hard work and commitment.”
