Three pit bulls involved in the May 5 mauling of a Flagler County woman were scheduled to be put down Wednesday, according to Diane Voigt, of the Flagler Humane Society.
The other two dogs have been turned over to the Humane Society and will be placed into the agency's assessment program, Voigt said.
"The victim positively identified them as being three of the dogs involved," Voigt said. "Given the severity of the unprovoked attack on her, we could not, in good conscience, release them into the community again."
Brandi Bookamer and her 6-year-old daughter were walking outside in Daytona North on a Sunday evening when five pit bulls attacked her.
Bookamer, 27, was able to protect her daughter from the attack by telling her to run home. Booker sustained numerous puncture wounds and lacerations from the attack, according to a police report.
She was airlifted to Halifax Hospital the night of the attack.
Bookamer is now at home recovering, according to Lt. Bob Weber, public information officer for the Flagler County Sheriff's Office.
Voigt said the two dogs will undergo the Humane Society's behavior assessment and, if deemed adoptable, will go to a rescue group for socialization and then adoption.
"In the meantime, our Animal Control Officers will be regularly patrolling the Daytona North area and will issue citations for any dogs found wandering loose in the community," Voigt said.
Voigt also said the Humane Society offers a free spay and neuter program for pit bulls and pit bull mixes, as well as other animals.
"Many of the traits that people find most objectionable in animals — whether its their dog or someone else's dog — can be pretty much eliminated by spaying and neutering them," she said.
