When Flagler County inmate Toze Reis gets released in May, he will be ready to go to work thanks to a training program offered at the Flagler County Detention Facility.

Reis is the latest inmate to complete a training course that has resulted in his certification as a food handler. Restaurants and food service companies require employees to obtain a Safe Staff Food Handler Certificate as part of their employment. The jail began offering the training last year.

The Palm Coast man has been in jail since January for disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana, use of drug paraphernalia, attempted possession of cocaine and possession of a controlled substance.

Reis said he is looking forward to putting his training to use.

“I appreciated this opportunity and I plan on applying for work as soon as I get out,” said Reis.

Teens-In-Flight student earns U.S. Air Force pilot seat
Juan Rodriguez has been selected to the U.S. Air Force for a designated pilot seat.

“Juan Rodriguez was our very first student in Teens-In-Flight's Flagler program to earn his Private Pilot License,” said Col. Jack Howell, the program’s administrator. “These pilot seats are extremely competitive. You have to be top-notch to be selected, and we couldn’t be more proud.”

The organization assisted Rodriguez in obtaining an Air Force ROTC scholarship to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach. He will take his pilot seat when he is commissioned May 2014.

Also, kudos to current Teens-In-Flight student Cora Rand, who has passed her FAA Private Pilot written examination.

Rand was selected to fly a cross country flight to Aurora, Colo., as part of the Teens-In-Flight fundraiser to support the shooting victims at the Century Theater in August 2012. She logged approximately 15 hours of flight time, some of which was under Instrument Flight Regulations conditions.

Rand is expected to solo within the next few weeks.

“Our kids have worked very hard and they deserve all the recognition they can get,” said Howell.
