Camp T-Rec hosts pirate week

A program for local children with special needs, Camp T-Rec hosted its Pirate Week last week, where campers kicked off festivities with a field trip to Cracker Creek, in Port Orange. There, they participated in a scavenger hunt, a cruise and an obstacle course.

Campers also made treasure chests and got their faces painted while a disk jockey blasted jams. The week ended with a pirate-themed magician and a playground treasure hunt.

This summer’s Camp T-Rec program has hosted 24 campers in each of its sessions, according to Lori Koplin, the city’s special populations coordinator. The camp meets 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, at the Nova Community Center.

Elks donate $600 for city veteran display

Ormond Beach Elks Lodge 2193 Exalted Ruler Jackie Curtis presented John Brinkley, of the Veterans Museum Education Center, a check for $600 to help install a veteran’s exhibit at City Hall.

The exhibit, which is on display in the City Hall lobby, was established to honor veterans, educate children and provide a place to foster patriotism, according to the Elks. The lodge will have its name inscribed on a plaque, as a supporter. And Brinkley is also currently collecting memorabilia for the exhibit.

The organization plans to highlight a veteran of the month at the exhibit, as well. Other veteran displays are also located at the Halifax Historical Museum, until Nov. 15, and the Ormond Beach Regional Library, Aug. 1 through Sept. 8.

Additionally, the Elks are currently seeking donations of gift cards, services and merchandise for its 22nd-annual Chinese Auction Nov. 2.

Call 405-9848 or 405-0830.
