A Monday afternoon residential fire sparked two Palm Coast painters to become lifesavers. Avel Garon and Agustin Derequito were on their way to lunch while working a job around the corner when they saw smoke coming from the home at 121 Wood Haven Drive. As they got closer, they also heard loud barking.

The smoke had already been called in by a neighbor, and Flagler County Rescue and Palm Coast Fire were en route when the two kicked in the door, thinking there was someone trapped inside. Instead, they found two dogs and brought them to safety.

Another dog was saved by the rescue crew. Upon arrival, crews began to work the fire, and Flagler County paramedic Ivan Grant could hear a dog crying.

“I knew that Lt. (Jason) Wagner was in there, and then the dog came sliding to me,” Grant said. “I grabbed him. He was limp and I set him on the board, gave him oxygen and started compressions to get his lungs to work a little harder.”

Grant’s action resuscitated Muffy, who is blind and was stuck in her cage.

Five to 10 minutes into working the fire from inside, the roof dropped in, according to Palm Coast Fire Chief Mike Beadle. The crew retreated and went into defensive mode.

As of 1:30 p.m., the fire was contained but still burning.
