A tow truck driver responded when a woman’s rental car broke down on Interstate 95. But not long after he arrived, the woman had climbed into the cab of his truck and was driving it north, toward New York.

“I thought she was playin’” the man said, after the theft occurred Wednesday, July 24.

The woman, Angela Estrella, 37, had asked the man if she could take his yellow flatbed to New York, and he, assuming she was kidding, said, “Sure!” She responded, “Really?” And then he followed up with a serious, “No.”

Regardless, when he turned his back to Estrella, she hopped in and started driving. Universal Towing then tracked the GPS on its vehicle and Estrella was located, and arrested, in Palm Coast, charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle.

A Volusia County sheriff’s deputy spotted Estrella’s broken down vehicle 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the 275 mile marker on northbound I-95. The deputy was the one to call the tow truck for Estrella, before he left to go back on patrol.

Estrella was later arrested by a Flagler County deputy and booked into the Flagler County Detention Facility, before being transferred to the Volusia County Branch Jail.
