Police are currently investigating a burglary that occurred about 9 p.m. yesterday, July 25, in the Spring Meadows subdivision.

The homeowner, Fred Lockey, heard noises near his sliding glass door inside of his back porch and, on investigating, discovered a man crouched outside, attempting to remove the door from its tracks. Lockey retrieved his .357 magnum revolver and returned to the door, shouting that he had a gun, at which point, the suspect began to flee.

The suspect then abruptly turned around and ran back toward the homeowner, Lockey said, so he fired a single shot in order to scare the would-be intruder off. The suspect then fled the scene.

Ormond Beach Police were assisted by Volusia County sheriff’s deputies and a K-9 unit while they combed the area looking for the burglary suspect. Local hospitals were notified in case the suspect had been injured by gunfire.

The suspect escaped and is at large at this time.

Due to darkness, Lockey could only describe the intruder as a 6-foot-tall male wearing a long-sleeved black shirt and blue jeans. Ormond Beach investigators are canvassing the area for possible leads, witnesses or evidence of other crimes.

Anyone with any information on this crime is asked to contact the Ormond Beach Police Department, at 677-0731, or Crimestoppers, at 277-TIPS or 1-888-277-TIPS.
