A late-night fire at a Palm Coast home Thursday evening left one man hospitalized and six of his family members without a home.

Flagler County Sheriff’s deputies, along with the Palm Coast Fire Department, responded to the home at 33 Westminster Drive around 11:12 p.m. after witnesses reported hearing an explosion and then seeing smoke coming from the home.

The state fire marshal was also called in. Investigators determined that a car battery had exploded, causing the fire. Deputies said a man, Peter Miroshnik, 55, had been working on the battery on the kitchen table.

Miroshnik was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment of burns to his lower legs. His family members, including three children, ages 2, 3 and 6, were taken to Florida Hospital Flagler for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Deputies said the house suffered severe smoke damage. Five small marijuana plants also were removed from the house. The investigation remains open.

The Red Cross is assisting the family with its immediate needs.
