The Waste Pro trucks that collect residents’ garbage and recycling items throughout Palm Coast are now being fueled with compressed natural gas, the city announced Monday.
Compressed natural gas burns cleaner than diesel fuel. As an added bonus of the conversion to CNG, the monthly residential solid waste fee in Palm Coast is dropping slightly starting this month, from $18.77 per household to $18.62.
Palm Coast is the third area to utilize Waste Pro’s new compressed natural gas fueling stations. Waste Pro’s other CNG fueling stations are in Fort Pierce and Daytona Beach, and the company plans to open additional facilities in Jacksonville and Tallahassee.
In Palm Coast, 19 Waste Pro trucks equipped with new CNG motors are used to gather trash and recycling materials. Contract stipulations in 2012 between the city and Waste Pro called for increased recycling opportunities, a doorstep hazardous waste program and cleaner truck emissions. All three provisions have now been completed.
Compressed Natural Gas is a fossil fuel substitute for diesel, widely considered a more environmentally clean alternative. The fuel helps operate quieter vehicles with fewer maintenance issues. CNG also costs less than diesel fuel.
“Together, the city of Palm Coast and Waste Pro have worked diligently to provide our residents the cleanest and most cost effective ways to improve our environment through our new solid waste processes,” said Dianne Torino, contracts and risk manager for the city. “It’s a win-win for everyone.”
